The Theoretical Network Thesis and Folk Psychology

Our common-sense terms for mental states are the theoretical terms of a theoretical framework (folk psychology) embedded in our common-sense understanding, and the meanings of those terms are fixed in the same way as are the meanings of theoretical terms in general.

The Deductive-Nomological Model of Explanation

The laws of any theory do more, however, than just give sense to the theoretical terms they contain. They also serve a predictive and an explanatory function, and this is their main value.

Propositional Attitudes

each expresses a distinct 'attitude' toward a specific proposition. In the technical vocabulary of philosophers, such states are said to display intentionality, in that they 'intend' something or 'point to' something beyond themselves: they 'intend', or point to, children, humans, and civilization.
