atom

Atom: The smallest particle of an element that has chemical properties of that element. These are the building blocks of matter.

element

Element:basic building block of matter; cannot be broken down into similar substances, consists of atoms of only one type

mass

Mass: The amount of matter in a substance. You can measure a mass using a balance. This not to be confused with weight.

density

A measurement of how solid something is.

Volume

The amount of space an object takes up.

Matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

Nucleus

The center of atom that contains protons and neutrons.

Protons

The positively charged particles found in the nucleus.

neutrons

The small neutral charged particles found in the nucleus.

electrons

The negatively charged particles inside of the nucleus in an atom.

Pieriodic table

A chart that contains all known elements arranged by that atomic number.

Solid

The state in which matter contains a fixed volume and shape

Liquid

The state in which matter maintains a fixed volume but adapts to its container.

Gas

The state in which matter expands to what ever volume is available.

Physical property

Characteristic that you can see through direct observation that includes color, texture, density, odor, ect.

Chemical property

Properties that can only be observed when one substance changes to another substance.

Physical change

A change from one state to another without a change in chemical composition.

Chemical change

results in the information of one or more new substances; a change that cannot be reversed.
