sum

An amount obtained as a result of adding numbers

difference

the result of a subtraction problem

product

a product is the result of multiplying, or an expression that identifies factors to be multiplied. Thus, for instance, 6 is the productof 2 and 3 (the result of multiplication), and is the product of and (indicating that the two factors should be multiplied together).

quotient

A quotient is the result of dividing one number by another. For example, the quotient of 8 and 4 is 8/4 = 2.

equation

Mathematics A written statement indicating the equality of two expressions. It consists of a sequence of symbols that is split into left and right sides joined by an equal sign. For example, 2 + 3 + 5 = 10 is anequation.

inequality

The feasible regions of linear programming aredefined by a set of inequalities. In mathematics, an inequality is a relation that holds between two values when they are different (see also: equality). The notation a ≠ b means that a is not equal to b.

balance

When both sides have the same quantity or mass.

inverse operation

Relating to a mathematical operation whose nature or effect is the opposite of another operation. For example, addition and subtraction areinverse operations, as are multiplication and division. An inverseoperation.

variable

In mathematical terms, the dependent variable y represents the value of a function of x. To simplify formulas, it is often useful to use the same symbol for the dependent variable y and the function mapping x onto y.

coefficient

A number or symbol multiplied with a variable or an unknown quantity in an algebraic term. For example, 4 is the coefficient in the term 4x, and x is the coefficient in x(a + b). A numerical measure of a physical or chemical property that is constant for a system under specified conditions.

term

In Algebra a term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.Terms are separated by + or − signs

expression

Math Term Definition. An algebraic expression is a mathematicalphrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators (like add, subtract, multiply, and divide).

slope

In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line. Slope is often denoted by the letter m. The direction of a line is either increasing, decreasing, horizontal or vertical.

ratio

In mathematics, a ratio is a relationship between two numbers of the same kind (e.g., objects, persons, students, spoonfuls, units of whatever identical dimension), expressed as "a to b" or a:b, sometimes expressed arithmetically as a dimensionless quotient of the two that explicitly indicates how many times .

proportion

A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal.

quadrants

The x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane into four regions. These regions are called the quadrants.

rational numbers

A rational number is a number that can be written as a ratio. That means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the numerator (the number on top) and the denominator (the number on the bottom) are wholenumbers. The number 8 is a rational number because it can be written as the fraction 8/1.

irrational numbers

An Irrational Number is a real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction. OK. A Rational Number can be written as a Ratio of two integers (ie a simple fraction).
