Line

A straight path that goes in both directions without end.

Line Segment

A straight path that has two definite endpoints. It is part of a line.

Endpoints

The point at the end of a line segment or ray.

Angle

An angle is formed where two lines or line segments meet.

Right Angle

An angle that makes a square corner. It measures 90 degrees.

Acute Angle

An angle that is less than a right angle. It measures less than 90 degrees.

Obtuse Angle

An angle that is greater than a right angle. It measures more than 90 degrees.

Plane Figures

Flat, closed figures (such as squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, etc.).

Closed Figures

A figure that has the same beginning and ending point.

Polygons

Closed figures that have straight sides.

Open Figures

A figure that has different beginning and ending points.

Symmetrical

A figure that can be folded so that the two halves match.

Line of Symmetry

A line that divides a figure into two matching halves.

Parallel

Lines in a plane that are going in exactly the same direction.

Intersecting Lines

Lines that cross each other at some point.

Congruent

Having the same size and the same shape.

Grid

A large square or rectangular area divided into smaller squares of equal size.

Ordered Pair

Two numbers that locate a specific point on a grid. The first number tells how many spaces to go to the right; the second number tells how many spaces to go up. (12,5) is an ordered pair.

Slide

When a figure is moved in a straight line.

Flip

When a figure is flipped or turned over.

Turn

When a figure is rotated around a point.

Solid Figures

Geometric figures (cones, cubes, pyramids, etc.) that have length, width, and depth and take up space.

Face

A flat surface of a solid figure.

Edge

A line segment where two faces meet.

Corner

A point where two edges meet.

Subtraction

Finding the difference between the whole and a part.

Graph

A drawing that shows and compares information.

Table

An arrangement of information in rows and columns.
