digit
A symbol used to write numbers.
The ten digits are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
is equal to (=)
Having the same value.
pattern
A sequence of numbers, figures, or symbols that follows a rule or design. Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
period
A group of three digits is called a period.
place value
The value given to a digit by its place in a number. Example: Look at the number 5,349. A 5 is in the thousands place and has a value of 5,000. A 9 is in the ones place and has a value of 9.
round
To change the value of a number to one that is easier to work with. To find the nearest value of a number based on a given place value. Example: 27 rounded to the nearest ten is 30.
standard form
The usual way of writing a number that shows only its digits, no words.

An inequality relationship showing that the value on the left of the symbol is greater than the value on the right. Example: 5 is greater than 3
word form
To write the number in words.

The value on the left side of the symbol is smaller than the value on the right side. Example: 4 is less than 7
expanded form/expanded notation
The representation of a number as a sum that shows the value of each digit. Example: 536 is written as 500 + 30 + 6.

A line that represents numbers as points.
