Rational Number
Numbers in the form of a/b, where a and b are integers and b does not equal 0
Bar Notation
In repeating decimals, the line or bar placed over the digits that repeat.
Irrational Number
A number that cannot be expressed as a/b, where a and b are both integers and b does not equal 0.
Real Number
The set of rational numbers together with the set of irrational numbers.
Whole Number
The set of positive integers
Multiplicative Inverse
The result of flipping a fraction (2/3 is now 3/2)
Reciprocal
The result of flipping a fraction (2/3 is now 3/2)
Integer
The set of whole numbers and their opposites
Absolute Value
The distance a number is away from zero on a number line
Perfect Square
A square root that is a whole number
Square Root
One of two equal factors of a number
Radical Sign
The symbol used to indicate a square root
Proportion
A statement of equality of two ratios
Volume
The number of cubic units needed to fill the space occupied by a solid
Cylinder
A solid whose bases are 2 congruent, parallel circles, connected with a curved side
Cone
A three-dimensional figure with one circular base. A curved surface connects the base and the vertex.
Surface Area
The sum of the areas of all the faces of a three-dimensional figure
Slant Height
The altitude or height of each lateral face of a pyramid
Scientific Notation
A way of expressing numbers as the product of a number that is at least 1 but less than 10 and a power of 10.
Legs
The 2 sides of a right triangle that form the right angle.
Hypotenuse
The side opposite the right angle in a right triangle.
Pythagorean Theorem
In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.
Converse
Can be used to test whether a triangle is a right triangle.
Pythagorean Triple
A set of three integers that satisfy the Pythagorean Theorem
Quadrants
The four regions into which the two perpendicular number lines of the coordinate plane separate the plane
Origin
The point of intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis in a coordinate plane.
