Variable
A symbol,usually a letter, used to repersent a number
Factor
A number that divides into a whole number with a remainder of zero
Prime Factor
A prime number that is a factor of a specific product
Composite Number
A whole number greater than 1 that has more than two factors.
prime factorization
Expressing a composite number as a product of its prime factors. Example: The prime factorization of 63 is 3 x 3 x 7.
Base
The number that is going to be raised to a power.

Example: in 82, 8 is the base
Exponent
A number that indicates how many times a number or expression is to be multiplied by itself. Example: In the expression 53, the exponent is 3.
Power
An expression of the form xn, read x to the nth power. Example: 74 is 7 raised to the fourth power, or 7 x 7 x 7 x 7.
Squared
The product of a number and itself. Example: The square of 6, or 62, is 36, because 6 x 6 = 36.
Cubed
The product in which a number is a factor three times. Example: The cube of 2, or 2 cubed, is 8 because 2 x 2 x 2 = 8.
Numerical expression
A mathematical expression that has a combination of numbers and at least one operation. 4 + 2 x 3 is a numerical expression.
order of operations
1. Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols.
2. Evaluate all powers.
3. Do all multiplications and/or divisions from left to right.
4. Do all additions and/or subtractions from left to right.
algerbra
A mathematical language that uses symbols, usually letters that stand for unknowns, along with numbers.
algebraic expression
An expression consisting of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations.
