What does the bottom/top indicate?

The bottom indicates the whole number

The top indicates how much of the number there is

How to reduce a fraction

Divide the top and bottom by a common factor

Adding and subtracting fractions

If the bottom is the same: just add the top

If the bottom is different: find a common number among the bottom

Multiplying Fractions

Just multiply straight across. For example:

4/5 * 10/12 = 40/60 = 2/3

Reducing the fractions before multiplying makes it easy

Reducing Diagonally

4/5 * 5/6 = 2/1 * 1/3

Division of Fractions

Flip the second fraction, then multiply

Comparing Fractions

Use the bowtie method

Cross multiply the denominator to the second numerator

3 over 7 and 7 over 12.

7 * 7 = 49

12 * 3 = 36

7 over 12 is bigger since its 49

Converting Mixed Numbers into Fractions

Multiply the bottom number to the integer, then add the top number. Put the result of that over the bottom number.

For example:

2(2/3)

3*2 + 2 = 8 = 8/3
