Methergine/methylergonovine - Oxytocic - Prevention and tx of postpartum hemmorhage. Action: Directly stimulates uterine and vascular smooth muscle causing uterine contraction.
Oral or IM IV only emergency |
C/A in htn, hepatic or renal disease.
S/E - hypotension, nausea, vomiting and cramps Nurs - Monitor BP, HR and uterine response. Assess for ergotism (cold, numb fingers and toes, chest pains, nausea, vomitiong, headache, muscle pain, weakness) If Methergine doesn't work, calcium may be low. |
