What is mass movement

Downhill movement of material under the influence of gravity. Can be fast or slow.

Types of mass movement

Soil creep

Mudflows

Landslide

Rockfall

Slumping

Runoff

Solifluction

Soil creep

Very slow movement of soil particles downhill, precise movement due to soil being wet or frozen and moving down and then up again as it thaws.

Mudflows

Involves earth and mud flowing downhill, occurs after heavy rainfall. Water gets trapped within rock, increasing pore water potential, forces rock particles apart and leads to slope failure.

Landslide

Fast moving block of rock sliding down a hill under gravity - occurs after heavy rainfall or earthquakes.

Landslide

Fast moving block of rock sliding down a hill under gravity - occurs after heavy rainfall or earthquakes.

Rockfall

Collapse of rock fragments on vertical cliff face commonly resistant rock under mechanical weathering e.g freeze-thaw

Landslide

Fast moving block of rock sliding down a hill under gravity - occurs after heavy rainfall or earthquakes.

Rockfall

Collapse of rock fragments on vertical cliff face commonly resistant rock under mechanical weathering e.g freeze-thaw

Slumping

Occurs in weak unconsolidated clays, with a permeable layer over an impermeable layer of rock which causes pore pressure build up and the land curves round.

Rockfall

Slumping

Occurs in weak unconsolidated clays, with a permeable layer over an impermeable layer of rock which causes pore pressure build up and the land curves round.

Runoff

Run off is the movement of water and sediment down a slope. Toxic chems contaminate storm water and cause a threat to coastal ecosystems.

Solifluction

Occurs in cold periglacial environments in the summer, where the surface layer of soil thaws and is very saturated so moves down hill by heave and flow.
