The Margarita
Tequila, trip sec, and lime juice are the three ingredients in a margarita.

aside from which tequila to use or kind of trip sec, another difference is whether a sweetener is used. And if so, the type of sweetener that is used.
ex: sugar, simple syrup, agave syrup..

can be served over ice, straight up, or frozen.

when ordered on the rocks this is the only drink that's placed in a highball glass.

Don't assume the customer wants salt on the glass rim (ask)

the establishment will decide type of salt used. however, sea salt, kosher salt or any other coarse grain salt is generally accepted.
basic margarita
1 1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz trip sec
1 1/2 oz sour mix

shake and strain into a salt rimmed cocktail glass with no ice when requested up, and into an ice filled highball glass when requested on the rocks
Top Shelf Margarita
(ASK CUSTOMER IF THEY'D PREFER SALT ON GLASS. IF SO, PLACE SALT ON THE RIM OF THE GLASS IF REQUESTED)

1 1/2 oz Blue agave Silver Tequila
1/2 oz Cointreau or Grand Marnier
1 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup

shake with ice and strain into HIGHBALL GLASS, LARGE ROCKS GLASS, COCKTAIL GLASS, OR SPECIALTY GLASS

Garnish: lime wedge
