Describe the carbon cycle:

Carbon is extracted from the atmosphere by plants (who use it for photosynthesis). The carbon is later transferred to animals who eat the plants. When plants and animals die, the carbon is returned to the atmosphere, or some of it may be trapped where decomposition can't take place. The amount of carbon trapped is about the same as that in the atmosphere so there is a balance. This is the carbon cycle.

How can the delicate carbon balance be upset?

One idea is that the overuse of fossil fuels may lead to more carbon being in the atmosphere than is trapped beneath earth's surface. This could possibly lead to an imbalance in the carbon cycle.

Describe the Oxygen Cycle:

21% of our atmosphere is made of oxygen. Plants add oxygen to our atmosphere and animals remove it by breathing it in and using it. At the same time, plants need carbon dioxide that animals exhale back into the atmosphere.
