The longitude line from which other longitudes are measured. It is numbered 0°.
Prime Meridian
The distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees. The lines that measure this on a map or globe run from North Pole to South Pole.
longitude
The imaginary line halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole, dividing the earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Its latitude is 0°.
Equator
Something used on a map that stands for real things and places on the earth's surface.
symbol
A way of showing distance or size on a map.
scale
The part of a map that tells what the symbols on the map stand for.
legend / key
Distance north or south of the earth's Equator, measured in degrees. The lines that measure this run east and west on a map or globe.
latitude
One half of a sphere or ball; half of the earth.
hemisphere
A system of crossing lines or boxes on a map or globe. Crossing latitude and longitude lines form this.
