Organizational Behaviour

A field of study that investigates the impact of individuals, groups, and structures on behavior within organizations; it's purpose is to apply such knowledge toward improving organizational effectiveness.

Organization

A consciously coordinated social unit, made up of a group of people who work together on common goals on a relatively continuous basis.

Systematic Study

Looking at relationships, attempting to attribute causes and effects, and drawing conclusions based on scientific evidence.

Evidence-Based Management (EBM)

Basing management decisions on the best available scientific evidence.

Intuition

A gut feeling not necessarily supported by research.

Contingency Approach

An approach taken by OB that considers behavior within the context in which it occurs.

Organizational Behaviour (OB)

The degree to which an employee identifies with the organization and wishes to remain with the organization.

Affective Commitment

The strength of an individual's emotional attachment to, identification with, and involvement in the organization.

Empowerment

Giving employees responsibility for what they do.



Ethics

The study of moral values or principles that guide our behavior and inform us whether actions are right or wrong.

Workforce Diversity

The mix of people in organizations in terms of gender, race. ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, and age, and demographic characteristics such as education and socio-economic status.

Productivity

Performance measures including effectiveness and efficiency.

Effectiveness

The achievement of goals.

Efficiency

The ratio of effective work output to the input required to produce the work.

Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB)

Discretionary behavior that is not part of an employee's formal job requirements, but that nevertheless promotes the effective functioning of the organization.

Positive Organizational Scholarship

An area of OB research that concerns how organizations develop human strengths, faster vitality and resilience, and unlock potential.
