What's the core idea of 'Avoid illusions of learning'

1. Don't trust your intuition as a gauge for your current knowledge or skill level

2. Keep looking for ways to make your judgements of knowledge and skill objective

Why is my intuition not a good measure?

Long story short, There are many cognitive illusions like the dunning kruger effect, fluency illusion, imagination inflation etc. that make your assessment especially likely to be wrong.

What are some good objective measures of competence we can rely on?

THE CORE IDEA IS TEST YOURSELF RIGOROUSLY

1. Peer review

2. To be able to explain it to someone who does not know it and get them to have an 'aha' moment

3. Simulate with all the real life complexities- The cardinal rule is practice like you play because you will play like you practice.

4. Go out there in the field with a clear 'objective function' and see what mistakes you made.

What is the 'curse of knowledge'

It basically states that someone who has successfully built a model of an area or concept long ago might gloss over how to build the model because they take that model for granted in their audience

What is 'student directed learning'?

It is the idea that students know best what they must do next. They should just do whatever their intuition tells them to study next. They should spend time on what makes them feel like they are learning. PS: This is neither very effective nor very efficient.
