compass

Acompass is a device that has a magnetized needle that spinsfreely. A compass needle usually points north.

magnetic declination

Theangle between these two lines is the angle between geographicnorth and the north to which a compass needle points. This angle is known as magnetic declination.

Van Allen belts

Between 1,000 and 25,000 kilometers above Earth’s surfaceare two doughnut-shaped regions called the Van Allen belts.

solar wind

The solar wind is a stream ofelectrically charged particles flowing at high speeds from thesun. The solar wind pushes against Earth’s magnetic field andsurrounds the field, as shown in Figure 15.

magnetosphere

The region ofEarth’s magnetic field shaped by the solar wind is called themagnetosphere.

aurora

When high-speed, charged particles get close toEarth’s surface, they interact with atoms in the atmosphere. This causes some of the atoms to give off light. The result is oneof Earth’s most spectacular displays—a curtain of shimmeringbright light in the atmosphere. A glowing region in the atmospherecaused by charged particles from the sun is called anaurora.

interesting facts

Just like a bar magnet, Earth has a magnetic fieldsurrounding it and two magnetic poles.

interesting facts

Since Earth produces astrong magnetic field, Earth itself can make magnets out offerromagnetic materials.

interesting facts

Earth’s magnetic fieldaffects the movements of electrically charged particles in space
