We children cried, and I said to my Father,

me te tangi hotuhotu atu, ‘He tangata kōhuru koe, Pāpā!

crying out in unison, 'You're a murderer, Dad!'

Kāore taku Pāpā i kōrero.

My Dad didn't say anything.

Ka huakina te poaka e ia, ka tangohia ngā whēkau.

He attacked the pig and took out the eggs.

Ka tahuna, ā, ka whakahokia ki tō mātou puni hei kai mā mātou.

It was burned and brought back to our camp for us to eat.

Ka tunua ki runga i te kāpura, kātahi, ka kainga.

It is cooked over a campfire and then eaten.

Ka mihi au ki taku Pāpā, ‘He reka te poaka nei, Pāpā!

I thanked my Dad, 'This pig is delicious, Dad!'

Ka kī mai a Pāpā,

‘I patua te poaka hei kai mā tātou e tama, kia kore ai tātou e hiakai.

The pig was killed for us boys to eat, so that we would not be hungry.
