Macrolides.
MOA What is it at higher doses? What is its spectrum? What gram negative bacteria does it treat? What does it treat? |
MOA: Binds to ribosome and inhibit protein synthesis
Bacteriostatic can be time-dependent bactericidal at higher concentrations • Not a very specific target in bacterial protein synthesis (will do this to a eukaryotic mitochondrional ribosome) • In mammals, macrolides cannot cross the mitochondrial membrane. Gram +ves Also Gram -ves eg Pasteurella spp. Basic pKa traps the macrolides in acidic environments eg abscesses, necrotic tissue, lungs, mastitis, metritis, foot rot. lung concentrations often exceed blood concentrations Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) Rhodococcus equi (equine respiratory infection) |

Name two macrolides
