Line of Sight

imaginary line drawn from the firer's eye through the sights to the point of aim

Line of Fire

the direction of the target from the gun

Burst of Fire

number of successive rounds fired with the same elevation and point of aim when the trigger is held to the rear

Trajectory

the curved path a round takes during its flight; affected by air resistance and gravity

Maximum ordinate

highest point above the line of sight to which a projectile rises during its flight; occurs approximately 2/3 of the way along the trajectory. As range increases, so does height of the maximum ordinate

Cone of Fire

group of trajectories resulting from a burst of fire is termed the cone of fire. As the burst of fire strikes a vertical target, the rounds form a pattern, oval in shape with the density of shots decreasing towards the edges

Beaten Zone

pattern formed when the cone of fire strikes the ground, oval or cigar shaped. Dispersion makes only part of the beaten zone where 85% of the rounds fall the effective beaten zone

Dangerous Space

occurs between the muzzle of the machine gun and point of the first graze, depends on range, height of weapon above target and target itself, shape of ground, flatness of trajectory

Dangerous Zone

area covered by dangerous space and beaten zone. Target must be included in the dangerous zone to have effective fire

surface danger zone

includes possible impact areas on both sides of trajectory and any ricochet areas

dead space

any fold or depression in the ground that prevents a target from being engaged from a fixed position

sustained fire

after enemy has been suppressed, normal rate of fire for gunner, 7 bursts without barrel melting

rapid fire

high volume of fire on enemy to suppress rapidly, can't maintain without barrel melting

cyclic

only engage aircraft or protect perimeter, hold down trigger, not realistic, barrel will melt

Grazing Fire

maximum ordinate is not bigger than 1m, max effective range 600m on flat ground

Plunging Fire

Maximum ordinate is greater than 1m, dangerous zone not from muzzle to beaten zone, used high to low ground, allows for maneuver units beneath fire.

Enfilade Fire

when long axis of beaten zone coincides with the long axis of the target. Frontal fire on enemy column, flanking fire on enemy line. Uses beaten zone to an advantage

Frontal Fire

Long axis of beaten zone is at a right angle to front or back of target. "You can see their little cat butts or their little cat faces through the sights"

Flanking Fire

delivered directly against flank of the target

Oblique Fire

Long axis of beaten zone is at an angle other than 90 degrees to front of target

Fixed Fire

Against a stationary point target when beaten zone will cover target without manipulation

Traversing Fire

Changes direction NOT elevation of aim; horizontal movement

Searching Fire

changes range by changing elevation; vertical movement

Traverse and Searching Fire

combination of direction and elevation changes

Swinging Traverse

on targets that require major changes in direction but no change in elevation

Free Gun

moving targets, change both direction and elevation
