Max elevation of that round above the LOS, usually 2/3 of the distance to the target

Cone of fire

(M240B)

Pattern of rounds that make a 2mil wide cone of lead

Beaten Zone

2 mil wide zone where the rounds will land

Dead Space

Occurs anytime the enemy or target drops below the line of aim/line of sight of the target(a product of terrain)

Danger Space

Any space up to 1.8meters above the deck

Plunging Fire

Where the danger space is confined to the beaten zone. When firing from the high to low ground. Effects of rounds are limited to the beaten zone where those rounds hit the deck.

Grazing fire

Where the center of the cone of fire does not rise more than 1meter above the deck.

Fires delivered in front of target, when target is oriented on the firing unit.

Oblique fire

Rixed fires

Fires delivered on point target without moving the gun.

Traversing target

Fires delivered on a wide target requiring changes in direction. Beaten zone is adjacent.

Searching

Fires delivered on a target in depth, requiring change sin elevation. Beaten zone is adjacent.

Traversing and searching

Fires delivered on oblique target req. changes in both direction and elevation. Beaten zone is adjacent.

Swinging Traverse

Fires delivered on targets with major changes in direction but little to no changes in eleveation. Fired at the cyclic rate of fire.
