Function of Lymphatic System

1.Production, maintenance and distribution oflymphocytes (WBC)

2.Return of fluid and solutes from tissues to thebloodstream

3.Distribution of hormones, nutrients, waste productsfrom tissues of origin to general circulation

What is interstitial fluid?

Fluid that moves outside of the capillary

Wha do lymphatic capillaries do?

Pick up excess interstitial fluid

What is the production of lymph?

Plasma --> interstitial fluid --> lymph

What is different about lymphatic capillaries and vascular capillaries?

lymphatic capillaries only allow movement into the capillary

What does the right lymphatic duct do?

collects lymph from the right sideof body above diaphragm (many people don’t have this duct).

What does the thoracic duct do?

collects lymph from lowerabdomen, pelvis, lower limbs and left half of head, neck and chest.

Where does the right lymphatic duct drain into?

Subclavian Vein

Where does the thoracic duct drain into?

Venous blood at intersection of the internal jugular and subclavian veins

What do T Cells (T lymphocytes) do?

directlydestroy foreign antigens or cancerous cells in the body. cell-mediated immunity

What do B Cells (B lymphocytes) do?

produce proteinscalled antibodies that mark foreign antigens for destruction. antibody-mediatedimmunity.

What are lymphoid nodules?

smallmasses of lymphoid tissue that are not surrounded by a fibrous capsule

What are the 5 tonsils?

1 pharyngeal tonsil, 2 palatine tonsils, 2 lingual tonsils

What are the 3 lymphoid organs in the body?

Lymph nodes, Spleen, Thymus

What do lymph nodes do?

Bean shaped structures that filter the lymph, contain T and B cells that will be activated by foreign antigens in lymph

Structure of Red Pulp of Spleen

RBCs and macrophages that remove worn out or damaged RBCs

Function of Red Pulp of Spleen

filters and stores blood

Structure of White Pulp of Spleen

T cells and B cells

Function of White pulp of Spleen

foreignantigens will activate the T cells and Bcells

What is the site for t-cells?

Thymus
