necessary for development of T-cells; posterior to the sternum, anterior and superior to the heart

cleans lymph fluid of bacteria; houses T-cells, B-cells, and macrophages

lymphatic vessels

a vast network of vessels absorbing interstitial fluid and transporting it as lymph fluid to lymph nodes, before returning the fluid to the bloodstream

lymph fluid

fluid escapes from cells/tissue into the interstitial space from where it is reabsorbed into lymphatic vessels as lymph; composed of mostly white blood cells that defend against bacteria in blood

lymphatic system

major component of immune system; helps maintain fluid balance; ex: capillary leakage is absorbed by lymphatic vessels, filtered, and returned to veins

T-cell

critical part of the immune response; T-cells attack bacteria, viruses and parasites, or assist B-cells in creating antibodies

B-cell

secretes antibodies
