What is Lymphedema? |
Excessive accumulation of fluid due to obstruction of lymphatics, causing swelling of the soft tissues of arms and legs. |
What is Lymphadenopathy? |
Enlargement of nodes, with or without tenderness. |
What is Acute Lymphangitis? |
An acute bacterial infection spreading throughout the lymph system; usually from streptococcal. |
What is the 1st stage of Lymphedema? |
Accumulation of fluid in limb or area of the trunk. Pitting edema present. Decrease in edema with elevation. Edema increase with activity, heat, or humidity. |
What is the 2nd stage of Lympedema? |
Continued fluid accumulation. Nonpitting. Skin begins to toughen, connective scar tissue, fibrosis present. Edema not reversible w/ elevation. |
What is the 3rd stage of Lymphedema? |
Continued fluid accumulation. Significant connective and scar tissue. Skin is resilient to touch, very tough, papillomas present, hyperkeratosis present. Edema not reversible w/ elevation. Subject to infections due to fluid buildup. |
What should pts w/ lymphedema be educated about? |
The 3 stages of Lymphedema, early intervention increases favorable results, how to reduce edema, and maintain skin care. |
What is the general exercise program guideline for Lymphedema? |
Begin w/ trunk 1st, then incorporate extremity ex. Use compression bandages or garment w ex. Low-risk aerobic training. AROM & gentle stretching. Low-intensity resistance ex w compression garment. Deep breathing & diaphragmatic breathing activities. |
What HR range should be achieved when lymphedema is present? |
Lower intensity 40-50% Max Target HR |
What HR range should be achieved when lymphedema is not present? |
Higher intensity up to 80% Max Target HR |
What are some lymphatic drainage exercise guidelines? |
Pumping ex from proximal progressing to distal areas while in an elevated position wearing compression garments and incorporating diaphragmatic breathing. |
