What is TB?
It is an infection disease, usually found in the lungs as these are the first sight of infection.
How is TB transmitted?
-close contact to indivuals which are infected over a long period of time
-more likely to catch if in a country where TB in common
-people who have reduced immunity are more likey to get infected
What is the course of infection of TB?
The bacteria grow in lungs.
bodies immune system responds with white blood cells to ingest bacteria
this leads to inflammation of lymph nodes. This is called primary infection
years later these bacteria may re-emerge to cause second stage of TB. This is called post- primary tuberculosis.
How can you prevent TB?
-more and better housing
-improved health facilities
-better nutrition
What is pulmonary tuberculosis?
This is when the tissue in lungs become scarred and can thicken the epithelium. This means that it is harder for oxygen to diffuse into the blood.
What is asthma?
It is an example of a localised allergic reaction. Allergens such as animal fur can cause white blood cells on the lining of the bronchi and bronchioles to release a chemical called histamine.
What is emphysema?
Emphysema is a disease smokers will develop over a long period of time (20 years). It makes the lungs loose its elasticity and stretch. The alveoli can become burst and when stretched, this means that less oxygen can be diffused as alveoli cannot work as efficiently.
