3 areas of the brain
Cerebrum, brain stem, cerebellum
The frontal lobe is responsible for:
Concentration, abstract thought, information storage, memory, and motor function. Contains Brocade area = motor control of speech. Largely a persons affect, personality, judgements, and inhibitions.
Parietal lobe is responsible for:
Sensory. Analyzes sensory information and relays to thalamus and cortical areas. Awareness of persons space, and spatial relations.
Temporal lobe is responsible for:
Auditory reception area. Interpretive area that provides integration of somatization, visual, and auditory areas. Dominant role of thinking
Occipital lobe is responsible for:
Visual interpretation.
Thalamus does?
Relay station for info except smell
Nasal ganglia do?
Control of fine motor movements of the hands and lower extremities
Hypothalamus does?
Regulates pituitary secretion of hormones that influence metabolism, reproduction, stress response, and urine production. Appetite control. Sleep - wake cycle, bp, aggressive and sexual behavior, and emotional responses. Autonomic nervous system.
Cranial nerve 1
Olfactory/sensory/smell: with eyes peed, the pt is asked to id familiar odors. Each nostril tested separately.
Cranial nerve 2
Optic/sensory/visual acuity: snellen chart; visual fields; opthalmoscopic examination
Cranial nerve 3
Oculomotor/motor/muscles move eye and lid: ocular rotations, conjugate movements, nystagmus
