What is Psychosis?
Loss of touch w/ reality
Disorganized thoughts and behaviors
Hallucinations (command and auditory)
Delusions- can lead to situational dangers
Difficulty communicating w/ others and relating
What is impulsivity?
Failure to resist an impulse or urge
Believed to be related to low levels of 5-HT, hyperactivity of the limbic system and inadequate controls in the cerebral cortex
Can be seen w/ Depression, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar and Manic Disorders
What are Hallucinations?
Occurence of sight, sound, touch, smell, or taste WITHOUT any external stimulus

Very REAL to the pt.
What are Illusions?
Simply tricks on one or more of your 5 senses and is the sensory misperception of environmental stimuli
What are auditory Hallucinations?
(Ears) Account for 70% of Hallucinations.
Caused by dysfunction in the language centers of the cerebral cortex.
Can include simple voices all the way to full conversations with nobody. Usually command hallucinations which are mean, obstructive and hurtful.
Problem: Level of Harm
What are Visual Hallucinations?
(Eyes) Dysfunction in the occipital lobe
Often occampanied by auditory hallucinations.

Ex. flashes of lights to elaborate or complex scenes
What are Gustatory (Olfactory) Hallucinations?
(Nose) Consists of putrid, found, and rancid smells or tastes usually of a repulsive nature.
Ex. fecal, GI, rotting flesh
What are Tactile Hallucinations?
(Touch) Verbilizations may include feels of electrical sensations coming from the ground or feeling like they are being touched by others without the presence of a person
What are Kinesthetic Hallucinations?
Somatic=bodily functions
The feelings of body processes or bodily functions such as blood passing through the veins, food digestion, or the formation of urine and feces.
What are Command Hallucinations?
Most Serious
Voice order the person to do something that is often percieved by others as freightening or something that may cause HARM to SELF/OTHERS
Ex. Cutting off a body part, striking out at somebody
What are some things to consider when dealing with all types of Hallucintations?
They are REAL to the pt.
If the patient is left unattended they can or may escalade
They interfere w/ ADL's and can lead to withdrawl from reality
They are considered a symptom of psychosis
What are the Interventions for Hallucinations?
Stay w/ client
Talk to the client/short simple phrases. seeing you helps discriminate real from fake
Attempt to identify triggers
Encourage client to describe the situation
If asked if experiencing the same, indicate NO and reinforce SAFETY
What are Delusions?
False beliefs that cannot be changed by logical reasoning or evidence
Results from a misunderstanding or poor EGO formation with reality
Thoughts are firmly FIXED
Problem with fibers crossing the 2 hemispheres
What is a delusion of Grandiosity?
a.k.a. delusions of granduer
An exaggerated sense of well being, importance or self worth.
Accompanied by Magical Thinking- when a person believes that thinking/thoughts will make something happen

protection of the EGO defense system
What is a Delusion of Control?
beleif that feelings, impulses, thoughts, or actions are not of one's own but are actions imposed by an external force.
