Lumbar plexus
The network of anterior rami from the L1 to L5 level that are responsible in innervating the lower extremities.
The lumbar plexus contains innervation to which muscular branches?
"Iliacus, Quadratus lumborum, and Psoas.
Iliohypogastric n. of the lumbar plexus (L1)
function- sensory & postganglionic sympathetic innervation of skin overlying lower anterior abdominal wall; sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn) innervation of muscles of the anterior abdominal wall
Ilioinguinal n. of the lumbar plexus (L1)
function- sensory & postganglionic sympathetic innervation of skin overlying proximomedial thigh, root of the penis & scrotum or mons pubis & labium majorum; sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn) innervation of muscles of the anterior abdominal wall
Lateral femoral cutaneous n. of the lumbar plexus
function- sensory & postganglionic sympathetic innervation of the skin overlying the lateral aspect of the thigh
Femoral n. of the lumbar plexus (L2-4)
The largest branch of the lumbar plexus, originates from the ventral rami of the second, third, and fourth lumbar nerves.
Saphenous n. (origin: femoral)
"The largest cutaneous of the femoral nerve.
Muscular branches of the femoral n.
"
Obturator nerve (Lumbar plexus)
Originates from ventral divisions of the 2nd 3rd and 4th lumbar nerves. Enters the upper thigh by way of the Obturator canal.
Muscular branches of the Obturator n.
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the gracilis, adductor brevis, adductor longus, adductor magnus & obturator externus muscles.
Accessory obturator branch of the Obturator nerve.
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the pectineus
Sacral plexus
the network of anterior rami from the L4-5 to S4 level that are responsible for innervating the lower extremities.
Nerve to the piriformis (Sacral plexus)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic, & motor (lmn); innervation of the piriformis muscle.
Nerve to the quadratus femoris (sacral plexus)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic, & motor (lmn); innervation of the quadratus femoris and inferior gemellus muscles.
Nerve to the obturator internus (sacral plexus)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic, & motor (lmn); innervation of the obturator internus and superior gemellus muscles.
Superior gluteal n. (sacral plexus)"
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of gluteus medius, gluteus minimis, & tensor facia lata muscles.
Inferior gluteal n. (sacral plexus)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of gluteus maximus muscle.
Muscular branches of the Sciatic nerve – tibial division (sacral plexus)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the semimembranosus, semitendinosus, biceps femoris (long head) & adductor magnus muscles.
Sural branch of the tibial nerve (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the skin overlying the lateral aspect of the leg and foot.
Muscular branches of the tibial n. (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris, popliteus, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus & flexor hallucis muscles.
Medial plantar branch of the tibial nerve (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the medial muscles of the plantar surface of the foot.
Lateral plantar branch of the tibial nerve (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the lateral muscles of the plantar surface of the foot.
Muscular branches of the Sciatic nerve – peroneal division (sacral plexus)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the short head of the biceps femoris.
Lateral sural branch of the common peroneal nerve (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the skin overlying the lateral aspect of the leg.
Deep peroneal branch of the common peroneal nerve (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus & peroneus tertius muscles.
Superficial peroneal branch of the common peroneal nerve (origin: sciatic)
function- sensory, postganglionic sympathetic & motor (lmn); innervation of the peroneus longus & peroneus brevis muscles.
