How is Ralph initially portrayed

"Fair hair"- important rich, classy could afford a haircut.


"fair boy" shows his stature is imidiatly better than Piggy

How is Piggy initially portrayed

"fat" less important than Ralph immediately


"shorter" shows he has less authority


"fat boy" fat means less clever and more of a burden.

How does Ralph treat Piggy

Useful but not important very little respect looks down on him.


When he finds out his name is Piggy he "screeches' with laughter shows how little he cares he is normal 12 year old boy also shows piggy would have been bullied

Respect asks for his name Always pointing stuff out to him trusts him and others to easily.

The conch

Both boys are excited by it and Ralph saw the conch as more important than Piggy. As the novel goes on it grows in importance.

"Meridew" as a surname very posh he leads the choir already has significant importance

Ralph is voted into power by the boys which annoys and ebarreses Ralph which is a signal for what is to come

Very weak and normal he faints a lot too he doesn't stand out for good reasons.

As an adventure they are "exploerers" shows there young age and innnocence in the novel and how weak they are mentally.

What impact does the beast start to have on the island.

Scares the younger children the older children try to reassure them. Ralph and Jack try to shake of the theory.

How is piggy different to the other boys on the island

he is more mature than the others he sees them as pigs also he is made fun of by the other boys and is far to caring of others where manliness i key especially between Ralph and Jack.

There is slight tension between them during the chapter as Ralph is trying to sort out a camp while Jack is hunting
