Organelle
Tiny cell structures that carry out specific functions in the cell.
Cell Wall
A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. It helps to protect and support the cell.
Cell Membrane
It controls what substances go into and out of a cell.
Nucleus
A large oval structure that acts as the brain of the cell.
Nuclear Envelope
It protects the nucleus. Materials go in and out of the nucleus through the nuclear envelope.
Chromatin
Thin strands floating ahead of the nucleus that contain genetic material, or the instructions for directing the cell's functions.
Nucleolus
This is where ribosomes are made.
Cytoplasm
The region between the cell membrane and the nucleus. It is a clear, thick gel-like fluid.
Mitochondria
They convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use. Known as the "powerhouses" of the cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
The passageways of this carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
Ribosome
Ribosomes are the organelles where proteins are produced.
Golgi Body
The Golgi bodies receive proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum and distribute them to other parts of the cell. They also release materials outside the cell.
Chloroplast
They capture energy from the sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell.
Vacuole
The storage areas of cells.
Lysosome
Small, round structures containing chemicals that break down some materials in the cell.
Specialized Cell
Cells that are specialized to perform a certain function.
Tissue
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a function.
Organ
Different types of tissues that function together.
Organ System
A group of organs that work together to perform a major function.
Bacterial Cell
A bacterial cell does not contain a nucleus and its genetic material is in the cytoplasm. It is smaller than normal cells.
