mechanism of action

local anest. renders a specific portion of the body insensitive to pain by interfering with nerve transmission.

drug effects

block generation and conduction of impulses through nerve fibers


systemically effects are on the circulatory and respiratory function depending on where the drug is administered


cardiac affects include decrease stoke volume, cardiac output, and peripheral resistance


respiratory affects include reduced respiratory functions and altered breathing patterns

indications

used for surgical, dental or diagnostic procedures

known drug allergy


adverse effects

limited and of little clinical importance in most circumstances


undesirable effects usually occur with high plasma concentration of the drug


with spinal anesth. you can get spinal headache


allergic reactions are rare but can include: rashes urticaria, edema


antidote

epinephrine given to maintain localized drug activity (lidocaine, bupivacaine/epinephrine)

interactions

if given with enflurane, halothone, or epinephrine these drugs can lead to dysrythmia few interactions clinically occur
