All of us have been around a child at some point, whether it being your son or daughter, sibling, grandchild, or maybe just a friend’s child. By a show of hands, how many of us had the thought cross your head, “Gosh, I wish this child would sit down and be still!” Surprising enough almost all of us. I too have had that thought and reaction around children. As I was growing up my brother was a very wild child. If he could have climbed up the walls and not fallen I’m sure he would have, well I even think he may have tried. I then adopted my daughter when she was two years old and I thought the same thing about her. “Wow”, I would say, how does she have so much energy? Will she ever get tired? Then the best question of all, why doesn’t she listen and pay attention to what I am telling her? Many children face these hurdles everyday. Our first thought as adults is that child is wild and the parents have no control. I too have thought this, but growing up with a brother who has been this way all his life, then raising a child with the same traits has made me rethink my assumptions. In a way it is true that the child is wild and uncontrollable and the parents are unable to do anything to change it, but there is an underlying cause for all of this. It is called ADHD. By the end of this speech you will have a good understanding of what ADHD is. First, I am going to explain what ADHD is. Next, I will discuss the treatments for ADHD. Finally, I will discuss what it’s like living with ADHD.
Now that I have told you a little about my experience with a child that is uncontrollable, I am going to tell you what ADHD is.
