Causes liver cirrhosis? (8)
Anything which damages hepatocytes can cause liver cirrhosis - as damaged hepatocytes activate Kuppfer cells to lay down collagen leading to fibrosis and sclerosis:

Viral hepatitis (B+C chronic)
Autoimmune hepatitis
Alcohol
Primary sclerosing cholangitis
Primary Biliary sclerosis
Wilsons - Cu metabolism (causes hepatocyte damage)
Cystic fibrosis
Alpha 1 antitryspin deficiency
What is Primary sclerosing cholangitis?
Cholestatic liver disease - inflammation and fibrosis of intra and extra hepatic bile ducts

Predominantly affects young men

Link IBD (esp UC)

Test: P-ANCA
What is Primary Biliary cirrhosis (PBC)
Chronic prgressive disorder middle aged women.

Granulomatous inflam. portal tracts leading to loss of small and medium bile ducts.

Strong link thyroid disease


Eventual cholestasis

Antinuclear antibodies (present 15%)

Antimitochondrial antibodies (present 95%)
