Functional unit of the Liver
Hepatocytes
A lipid substance produced by the liver and used in the digestion of fat.
Cholesterol
Capillaries of the Liver. Lined with phagocytic macrophage cells called "Kupffer's cells. Cells remove bacteria, dead cells, and other foreign substances from the blood, especially the portal blood, flowing into the liver from the intestines.
Sinusoids
Excessively high pressure in the portal vein. Normal pressure 3mm/Hg. Anything > 9 to 10 mm/Hg considered high.
Portal Hypertension
The accumulation of serous (serum-like) fluid in the peritoneal cavity. Includes the abdominal cavity and the pelvic region up to the underside of the diaphragm, excluding the kidneys. Usually occurs as a result of portal hypertension.
Ascites
Used in the pre-planning stages of an Rh negative mom and Rh positive dad to prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn. A concentrated for of Rh-positive antibody. Given at 7 months gestation if Rh incompatibility is suspected. Given again, post prenancy to protect future pregnancies.
RhoGAM - Rh immune globulin.

Primarily passed by oral-fecal contamination resulting from poor hygiene contaminated food. Formerly called Infectious hepatitis.
Hepatitis A
Blood borne especially maternal to child. Also sexual transmittion.Long Incubation period (1 to 7 months). Viral, Can develop persistent carrier state. Highly contagious. Virus is a double-stranded DNA virus called a Dane particle. Can develop into persistent infections. chronic liver inflammation
