Plot

The sequence of events or the action of the story.

Inciting incident/ initial incident

Introduces the major conflict in the story. The point in the story where the main character has to make a decision.

Crisis

High point of reader interest where the main conflict creates sudden interest. There can be several crises in a plot.

Climax

The highest point of reader where the main conflict is resolved.

Rising action

The sequence of events leading to the climax.

Denouement

The sequence of events after the climax to the end of the story. Wraps up the loose ends.

Falling action

Two people fighting physically or verbally



Man vs self -


A person struggles to decide something



Man vs nature -


A person fights against a natural force



Man vs society -


A person struggles against society (racism)

Foreshadowing/foreboding

Hints early in a piece of writing about events which happen later. It creates interest and suspense.

Suspense

A feeling of anxiety in the mind of the reader or audience. Suspense is not found in the story; techniques which create suspense are found such as a spooky setting or character names "Igor"
