Allegory
A story can be taken on a literal as well as symbolic level; moral, religious, political. Ex: Animal Farm.
Ambiguity
Multiple meanings a literary work may communicate, especially two incompatible meanings.
Anachronism
Something presented out of actual chronological time that would be impossible. Ex: Hamlet answering his cell phone.
Animism
The belief that natural objects and phenomena posses souls. (Animated objects)
Aphorism
A short and usually witty saying.
Apostrophe
Direct Address, usually to someone or something not present. Ex: The poem "To Autumn" is an apostrophe to the season.
Bathos/Pathos
A writing that evokes pity and sympathy; moderately schmaltzy.
Bombast
Pretentious, exaggerated language. Using the largest words possible in order to feign intelligence.
Catharsis
The 'cleansing' of an emotion an audience member experiences, having seen the event take place on stage.
Conceit/Controlling Image
In poetry, a startling or unusual metaphor, or one developed over several lines.
