What are Literary Elements? |
Found in every story and novel. Must have the following components: characters, setting (time and place), problem (conflict), events (rising action), climax, soulution (resolution). |

What is a Plot? |
The plan or main story of a story or novel. (The sequence of events in a story.) |

What components does a Plot need to have? |
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.

Exposition |
Introduces the setting, characters, and the basic situations. |

Rising Action |
As the conflict grows, excitement and energy builds. |
|
Climax |
A turning point in the action of a story that has powerful effect on the plot. The peak of conflict in the story. |

Falling Action
|
Events that leads to the resolution. |
|
Resolution
|
The conclusion of a plot's conflicts and complications; events that lead to the resolution. (Outcome of the conflict).

Conflict |
A struggle between opposing forces.
|

Dialogue |
Conversation between two or more characters. |
|
Genre |
French word meaning kind or type. Major genres are poetry, ficiton, non-ficiton, drama, and essays. |

Sensory language |
Writing or speech that appeals to one or more of the five senses. |

Fiction
|
Writing that tells about imaginary characters or events. |

Short story
|
Brief work of fiction.

Theme
|
The central message expressed in a story.

Characters
|
People or animals who take part in the action.

Predictions |
Making an educated guess about what happens next. |

Alliteration
|
A poetic device that repeats the same beginning sound for effectiveness.
Ex: Sally sells seashells by the sea shore. |

Onomatopoeia |
Refers to the use of a word that resembles the sound it denotes. |

Personification |
Giving an animal or object, human qualities or human characteristics given to non-human things. |

Simile |
A comparison using like or as |

Metaphor |
