Allegory
A symbolic narrative in which the surface details imply a secondary meaning.
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds in a group of words close together. (simply singing a sorrowful song)
Allusion
A reference to a work of literature or to a well-known historical event, person, or place
Analogy
A comparison of two things, stressing their similarities.
Anaphora
Is emphasizing words by repeating them at the beginnings of neighboring clauses. (Mad world! Mad kings! Mad compostion!)
Antagonist
A person or force that opposes the protagonist in a story or drama; an enemy of the hero or heroine.
Antihero
A protagonist or notable figure who is conspicuously lacking in traditional heroic qualities.
Antithesis
It is the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, usually in a balanced way. (It was the BEST of times, it was the WORST of times...)
Aside
A dramatic convention in which a character turns "aside" to speak a few words directly to the audience or to another character, but is now supposed to be heard by others on the stage
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in a group of words close together. Assonance is used most frequently in poetry, both within a single line or within a group of lines.
