Personality test
The personality tests are tests that are conducted as part of the application process for many of the jobs Ehrenreich applies for. These have absolutely ridiculous questions, and are demoralizing.
The Hearthside
Restaurant that Ehrenreich works for, where Ehrenreich exposes the strenuous, and almost abusive work environment.
Jerry’s
Another restaurant, Ehrenreich works here in addition to the Hearthside because she needs a second job, as she barely makes enough to keep a roof over her head.
The Break Room
Ehrenreich says that the break room shows the entirety of the situation, as there is no break room at Jerry’s, because there are no breaks at all.
Glenwood Apartments
Ehrenreich looks at a room here, advertised at $65 a week. This may be the only affordable housing, but the conditions are so bad that it is “probably illegal” (55).
The Maids
Housecleaning service where Ehrenreich gets a job.
Woodcrest Residential Facility
This is the nursing home where Ehrenreich works on the weekends as a second job, as a “dietary aid”.
Backpack Vacuum
A Vacuum cleaner that straps onto workers backs. Adds to the "burden" that Barb must carry.
“Cosmetic Touches”
The maid service doesn’t care about germs at all, and says it is all in the cosmetic touches. Inside look at the working conditions.
“That’s a real workout, isn’t it?”
A client who is a personal trainer recognizes how strenuous Barbara’s job is.
