What does noncontrastive mean?
when interchanging the two sounds does not result in a change of meaning
What is another def of phoneme?
a class of speech sounds that are judged by a native speaker to by the same sound
What is another def of allophone?
Each member is a particular phoneme class, which corresponds to an actual phonetic segment produced by a speaker
What is distribution?
is the set of phonetic environment in which a phone occurs?
What is contrastive distrubution?
when interchaging the two sounds can change the meaning of a word
What is a minimal pair?
a pair of words with different meaning that are prounounced exactly the same way except for one sounds that differs. Ex. pill/pull
What is complementary distribution?
phones always used in different environments, but are still allophones of the same phoneme
