Definition of a Line

A rope which has been cut to a specific length and for a particular purpose

How do lines deteriorate

Local abrasion:caused by movement of the line over a sharp or rough edge whilst under load


Cuts and contusion: Can cause internal and external damage : caused by broken glass or falling debris


Overloading: A lot of load is applied suddenly


HEAT: from fires or friction


Prolonged exposure to sunlight : cause weakening of surface fibres


Chemical attack: natural fibre lines can be damage

A general purpose line, made from polypropylene and is 15.5 metres long

What is a short line used for

A short line is used when a long line would be too awkward ; like securing a suction

What is a long line

Is a general purpose line made from polypropylene; it is 31 metres long

What is the use of a long line

-They have variety of uses ; haul equipment and hoses aloft


-not be used for rescue purposes

What is a pouch line

A general purpose line carried by all firefighter ; made of plaited nylon; it is 4 metres

Variety of uses ; lashing a branch in position if it needs to be left working unattended

When are lines tested

1) one acceptance


2) After operational use


3) Quarterly


4) Annually at workshops

How are lines tested

-Inspection -examine entire line 300mm increments ; untwist to spot internal damage


-Carrier- inspect carrier bag for major cuts 25mm : check shoulder strap stitching is good


-Stowage - Lines should be made up in a way which does not interfere the opening and closing of shutter doors


*firefighter gloves should be worn during inspection


*not carry out local repairs


*if defect spotted report to officer in charge
