What did Albert Einstein call light particles?
Photons
What is the law of reflection?
The angle of incidence always equals the angle of reflection.
What does a convex mirror do to the reflection?
It projects it outwards.
What does a concave mirror do to the reflection?
It projects it inwards.
What does a convex lens do to the image?
It shows the image upside down.
What does a concave lens do to the image?
It shows the image right side up
Explain what nearsightedness is.
When the eye is to long so you're unable to see far away.
Explain what farsightedness is.
When the eye is to short so you're unable to see close up.
What is Total Internal Reflection and how is it used in fiber optics?
If light doesn't have enough energy or it hits at the wrong angle it won't pass from one medium to another, it will reflect. Fiber optics sends a message through a wire at the right angle so that it doesn't reflect.
What is the difference between real images and virtual images?
Real images are seen upside down. Virtual images are seen right side up.
What are rods sensitive to?
light
What are cones sensitive to?
color
In words, describe the path light travels though the eye.
Light enters the pupil, reflects off the cornea and focuses on the retina. There it travels through the optic nerve to the brain.
What is faster light or sound?
light
Are sound waves part of the electromagnetic spectrum?
no
How/why can we see things?
Light reflects off of objects into our eyes.
What are the 3 primary colors in light?
red, blue, and green.
What is the most common type of colorblindness?
red-green
What is polarized light?
Light that is filtered.
What are lasers?
Condensed light of one color.
Where are lasers used in everyday life?
Supermarket scanners, TV's, etc.
What are the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum?
radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible radiation, ultraviolet radiation, x-ray radiation, and gamma ray radiation
Which part can detect cracks in bones and other solid substances?
x-rays
What part was discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen?
x-rays
What part is emitted by radioactive substances?
gamma rays
What part is used in cooking?
microwaves
What part is used in visual entertainment?
radio waves
What part was discovered by Guglielmo Marconi?
radio waves
What part can burn skin?
ultraviolet radiation
What part can be used to sterilize?
ultraviolet radiation
What part is used in remote controls?
infrared radiation
What part emits heat?
infrared radiation
