The Law of Reflection |
Light gets reflected from the surface at the same angle it hits the surface.
For example: if lights hits a surface at 45 degrees, it will bounce back off at 45 degrees. |
reflect |
When light hits a smooth surface and bounces back off, such as light off a mirror. |
refract |
When light hits a surface and bends when passing through the material, such as light through water. |
transparent |
Letting light pass through (clear). |
translucent |
Letting some light pass through (like frosted glass). |
opaque |
Letting no light pass through (solid) |
What is light? |
Energy! (Remember: Energy is not created or destroyed, just transferred.) |
absorption |
When light does not bounce back or pass through an object, but when it passes into an object and becomes thermal (heat) energy. |
Why does light bend? |
Because when it hits an object, the speed at which it is travelling changes. |
concave |
When an object is curved inward (pushed in). (Think of a cave - you go IN to a cave.) |
convex |
When an object is curved outward (pushed out). |
Angle of Incidence |
The angle at which light hits an object. |
Angle of Reflection |
The angle at which light reflects (bounces) off of an object. |
