What are the two kinds of waves that affect our lives every day?

sound waves and light waves

How are light and sound waves similar?

Both light and sound waves have crests, troughs, and wavelengths

How are waves measured?

wavelengths

How do light waves travel?

straight paths called rays

Do light waves need matter to travel?

no

What four things can a light ray do when it hits an object?

reflect, refract, transmit, absorb

How do we know we can see light waves?

We see color

What color is the longest wave?

red

What color is the shortest wave?

violet

What colors make up the visible spectrum?

red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

What can we use to see the different colors that make up white light?

A prism because it refracts (bends) the white light so we can see all of the colors in the visible spectrum (rainbow)

WHat happens to white light when it passes through a glass prism?

bends

What is the bending of light called?

refraction

How does a rainbow occur?

light passes through tiny water droplets, the droplets act like a prism

What happens when light is absorbed by an object?

light is taken in by the object

What happens when light is reflected by an object?

light rays bounce back from the surface of the object

The number of vibrations in a unit of time is...

frequency

What is a convex lens?

A lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges. It refracts (bends) light rays toward each other

What is a concave lens?

A lens that is thinner in the middle than at the edges. It refracts (bends) light rays away friom each other

What happens when light rays hit an opaque object?

The light rays are blocked and you only see a shawdo. A book is an example of an opaque object

What happens when light rays hit a translucent object?

Some light rays will pass through. An example of a translucent object is frosted glass.

What happens when light rays hit a transparent object?

A transparent object lets almost all light pass through. A clear glass window is an example of a transparent object.
