Duty To Act

Define:
Any lifeguard on DUTY has a responsiblity to act during an emergency. |
Apply:
Someone is drowning under your supervision @ YOUR workplace, it is your job to save them |

Consent

Define:
Victim MUST give permission in order to recieve care |
Apply:

Refusal To Act
|
Define:
Victim refuses care, you must honor that. Make sure it is documented & get witnesses to write a statement or signature. |
Apply:
A boy falls and his arm is all cut up and he is angry and doesnt want help. He leaves and hits something and now his arm is broke. You need to document that he left and refused care. Get witnesses to write what they saw and sign it. |

Abandonment
|
Define:
Once you BEGIN care it must be continued UNTIl EMS arrives, You become too tired to continue, victim is conscious, or someone equal or higher training takes over. |
Apply:
At the mills mall someone needs CPR. You begin administrating CPR and you leave because you panic. You are responsible for what happens to that person! |

There is a confritation between a guard and patron, write only what was said and what you saw. |

Define:
Victims right to privacy. Keep info learned about the victim secret. |

Keep things like medical info, physical problems or meds taken to your own knowledge. |

Define:
Minimum standard of care. Do every thing to the best of your ability |

Negligence

Define:
Fail to meet minimum standard care. |
Apply:
Someone is drowning and you dont attempt to save them. |

Good Samartian Law
|
Define:
Willing to provide care not negligent, out of good faith. |
Apply:
At another pool that you dont work at, someone is drowning, you attempt to save them and lets say they dont make it. You are protected because you were trying to help them with out being responisble for saving them. |
