What do wetlands store?

They store the overflow from rivers when they flood after heavier rains

What other important role, other than storing the overflow from rivers, do wetlands play?

Another important role is their ability to filter pollutants from the water and to keep it in the soil

What factors can the fertility of wetland areas be ascribed to?

1. The tides cause fast cycling of nutrients and washing away of waste substances

2. Nutrients are washed away from the rivers to the estuaries

3. The shallow water has a high degree of light penetration

4. The many plants create a network of roots & stems that hold on to dead organic matter, thus creating a decomposes food chain

5. The slow- flowing water allows many photosynthesising plants to grow in the estuaries, the basis of many food chains
