What do wetlands store? |
They store the overflow from rivers when they flood after heavier rains |
|
What other important role, other than storing the overflow from rivers, do wetlands play? |
Another important role is their ability to filter pollutants from the water and to keep it in the soil |
|
What factors can the fertility of wetland areas be ascribed to? |
1. The tides cause fast cycling of nutrients and washing away of waste substances 2. Nutrients are washed away from the rivers to the estuaries 3. The shallow water has a high degree of light penetration 4. The many plants create a network of roots & stems that hold on to dead organic matter, thus creating a decomposes food chain 5. The slow- flowing water allows many photosynthesising plants to grow in the estuaries, the basis of many food chains |
