Describe the relationship between Libya and The United States during the past twenty years. Why does the USA feel the way that it does about Libya and its leader?
Libya’s leader, Muammar Qaddafi (you will see many spellings), has been identified as a terrorist by the USA. He claimed responsibility for a number of attacks on Western ports and cities and was suspected of financing terrorist groups and developing weapons of mass destruction. In the 1980s the USA attacked the Libyan capital of Tripoli, killing his infant son and destroying much of his military force. Since that time Libya has been under strict U.N. sanctions. Recently, Qaddafi has agreed to allow U.N. inspectors into his country and promised to end all plans to produce weapons of mass destruction.
