How does the government how support old age?

A state pension was developed.


5s for a single person


7s 6d for a couple.

What did the National insurance act do?

Enforces health insurance to all of those earning under £160 a year.



The worker would pay 4d, the employer 3d and the state 2d.



Covered claims up to 9s. Provided free treatment and maternal care up to 30s.

What did the government do to tackle unemployment?

Insured workers were given 7s a week for up to 15 weeks a year if they were unemployed.



It was not designed for most trades. It focused on seasonal workers.



This part broke after WWI due to mass unemployment.

Why were these reforms set up?

The government couldn't recruit 75% of men in the country to fight in the second Boer war, as they were all unfit due to substandard conditions.
