Ma chérie, Il est presque minuit. Je viens de rentrer à l'hôtel, et j'ai envie de te raconter mon voyage et ma première soirée en Afrique. Je suis arivé à Bamako en fin d'après-midi après un voyage très agréable, A Roissy, Lefèvre m'a présenté à un ami sénégalais, M. Diouf, qui allait lui aussi à Bamako pour la Foire du Livre et nous avons voyagé ensemble. Pendant le vol, il m'a longuement parlé de l'Afrique et des Africains, de leur façon de vivre, du climat du mali, du tourisme, de l'artisanat, etc. Quand je suis descendu de l'avion, je ne me suis pas senti trop dépaysé car je savais des tas de choses sur le Mali, Première suprise : j'avais très peur de la chaleur, mais je la trouve supportable. Autre surprise agréable : mon hôtel. |
My darling, It's almost midnight. I just got back to the hotel, and I want to tell you about my trip and my first evening in Africa. I arrived in Bamako at the end of the afternoon after a very pleasant trip, In Roissy, Lefèvre introduced me to a Senegalese friend, Mr. Diouf, who was also going to Bamako for the Book Fair and we traveled together. During the flight, he spoke to me at length about Africa and Africans, their way of life, the climate of Mali, tourism, crafts, etc. When I got off the plane, I didn't feel too out of place because I knew a lot about Mali, First surprise: I was very afraid of the heat, but I find it bearable. Another pleasant surprise: my hotel. |

Je m'attendais à quelque chose de confortable, et je me trouve dans un hôtel magnifique, avec piscine et tennis, des fleurs et des plantes vertes partout, et j'ai une grande chambre avec une belle vue sur la ville. J'ai passé une heure au bord de la piscine où les clients de l'hôtel se baignaient ou prenaient l'apéritif. Le coucher de soleil sur le fleuve Niger était merveilleux. |
I expected something comfortable, and I find myself in a beautiful hotel, with a pool and tennis court, flowers and green plants everywhere, and I have a large room with a beautiful view of the city. I spent an hour by the pool where hotel guests were swimming or having an aperitif. The sunset over the Niger River was wonderful. |

Vers 8 h, M. Diouf est venu très gentiment me chercher à l'hôtel. I voulait me montrer Bamako, puis m'inviter au restaurant. Mais il faisait muit quand nous sommes sortis de l'hôtel. Je n'ai donc pas bien vu la ville. Je t'en parlerai dans ma prochaine lettre. |
At around 8 am, Mr. Diouf came very kindly to pick me up from the hotel. I wanted to show me Bamako, then invite me to the restaurant. But it was dark when we left the hotel. So I didn't see the city well. I'll tell you about it in my next letter. |

Nous sommes allés dans un très bon restaurant où on servait une cuisine intermationale mais aussi des plats typiquement africains. J'ai choisi un poulet au pili-pili, qui est une sauce au piment assez forte. C'était délicieux. Nous avons pris du vin de palme (qui se boit glacé). J'ai passé une soirée agréable. Mes premières impressions de l'Afrique sont donc très bonnes. Demain commence la Foire du Livre. J'espère que j'y ferai du bon travail. Je te téléphonerai bientôt. Je t'embrasse. François. |
We went to a very good restaurant where they served inter-national cuisine but also typical African dishes. I chose a chicken pili-pili, which is a pretty hot chili sauce. That was delicious. We took palm wine (which is drunk ice-cold). I had a pleasant evening. My first impressions of Africa are therefore very good. Tomorrow begins the Book Fair. I hope I will do a good job there. P.S. Petit incident au restaurant : un client a bousculé le serveur au moment où il apportait le poulet. Résultat : mon costume beige a une belle tache de pili-pili. Le client était désolé. n voulait absolument payer le nettoyage du costume. J'ai refusé, bien sûr, mais j'espère que la tache va partir. Sinon j'aurai un premier souvenir pimenté ! |
P.S. Small incident at the restaurant: a customer jostled the waiter when he was bringing the chicken. Result: my beige suit has a nice pili-pili stain. The customer was sorry. I absolutely wanted to pay for the cleaning of the costume. I refused, of course, but I hope the stain will go away. Otherwise I will have a first spicy memory! |
