What is permaculture

The conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems that resemble natural ecosystems.

Designs are diverse, stable, sustainable and resilient.

Permaculture integrates land and people allowing food, energy, shelter and other material/non-material needs to be provided for in a sustainable way.

Permaculture is based on 3 ethics and 12 design principles that together function to benefit life in all of its forms.

12 Principles

Observe and interact

Obtain a yield

Self regulate and accept feedback

Use & value renewables

Produce no waste

Design from pattern to detail

Integrate rather than segregate

Small slow solutions

Use & value diversity

Use edges, value the marginal

Creatively use & respond to change

Zones

Areas that are defined by frequency of use

Zone 0: center of activity

Zone 1: closest to zone 0 location

that requires frequent.

attention and needs to be

visited often

Zone 2: requires less frequent

attention/maintenance

Zone 3: Maintenance / attention is

minimal

Zone 4: A semi wild area

Zone 5: wild area. No human

intervention

Consider:

-How often you use the area/element

-How often you need to access/service the area/element

Sectors

Defined energies and directional forces that enter your site from the outside and are usually beyond your control

Sectors (energies) can be :

1. Blocked

2. Channeled

3. Allowed to pass through

Examples:

-wind summer/winter

-sun

-damaging winds (salty, sandy, etc)

-pollution

-unwanted views

-water flow (flooding)

-Fire
