What is the purpose of Flag State Control? |
The flag state of a vessel is the state under whose laws the vessel is registered or licensed. |

This means a Document of Compliance issued to a company which complies with the requirements of the code. |

What is a safety management system? |
This is a structured and documented system enabling company personnel to implement effectively the company safety and environmental protection policy. |

What is a safety management certificate? |
This is a document issued to a ship which signifies that the company and its shipboard management operate in accordance with the approved safety management system. |

What is a major non-conformity? |
A Major Non-Conformity is an identifiable deviation that poses a serious threat to the safety of personnel or the ship or a serious risk to the environment that requires immediate corrective action or the lack of effective and systematic implementation of a requirement of this code. |

What are the objectives of the ISM Code? |
To Ensure safety at sea, prevention of human injury or the loss of life, and avoidance of damage to the environment, in particular to the marine environment and to property. |

What are the functional requirements of a safety management system? |
1 - A safety and environmental-protection policy 2 - Instructions and procedures to ensure safe operation of ships and international and flag state legislation. 3 - Defined levels of authority and lines of communication between and amongst, shore and shipboard personnel. 4 - Procedures for reporting accidents and non-conformities with the provisions of this code 5 - Procedures to prepare for and respond to emergency situations. 6 - Procedures for internal audits and management reviews. |

What is a Document of Compliance (IMDG)? |
This is a document which is required to be carried by all vessels intending to transport Dangerous goods at sea. It details the classes which the ship is suitable to carry as well as the cargo spaces where they may be carried. Also listed is any additional safety equipment which the ship must carry and maintain. This document is renewed following a survey every 5 years. |

What is a Document of Compliance (ISM)? |
Issued to a company it declares that the companies SMS is satisfactory. A copy should be kept on board each vessel listed on the DOC. Only valid for ships listed on it. Issued for 5 years max. Annual Verification within 3 months of anniversary date. DOC to be withdrawn if annual verification not requested. If DOC withdrawn all ships SMCs/ISMCs withdrawn also. |

To whom does the IMDG Code apply to? |
The codes applies to all ships irrespective of size or type, carrying substances, material or articles identified by this code as being dangerous goods and marine pollutants. This code applies to all ships carrying dangerous goods in packaged form, but does not apply to ships stores and equipment. |

What is Lifting Gear? |
Any gear which a load can be attached to a lifting appliance and which does not form an integral part of that appliance or load but DOES NOT INCLUDE pallets, one trip slings and pre slung cargo slings and freight containers. |

Includes any lifting appliance or lifting gear. |
